Sadness

I sit here in silence with nothing but raindrops to keep me company,
They play a pleasing melody like fingers on ivory . . .
yet the sounds in my heart are agonizingly out of tune
in painful tremors of misfortune.

Opportunities abound to enjoy a vibrant life
if only I could open the door,
But the door is heavy with the weight of my circumstance . . .
so my hand lays unmoved.

Who among you can claim differently?
If you tell me to have faith, that I will be sustained . . .
I will call you, “liar”, for joy is elusive and peace ephemeral,
While sadness slips on easily and happily lingers.

I grow tired of the fight for joy and peace,
From this moment forward, I will surrender to the inevitability of sadness,
No one need join me for sadness welcomes the lonely,
If I can endure, perhaps I can hug it to death and rejoice in victory.
